Hale County's current population is 34,671 based on the 2000 census. One of 254 counties in Texas, Hale County is located in the center of Llano Estacado or Staked Plains in the center of the northern tier of the South Plains. During the 1880's the area where the county is located was barren waste land with scattered buffalo, wild horses, antelopes, coyotes, prairie dogs, and rattle snakes. Hale County, organized in 1888, was named in honor of Lt. John C. Hale, a hero of the Battle of San Jacinto. Plainview, the county seat, is located near the center of the northeast quarter of the county on the Runningwater Draw. |
